For Families: What's Clever MFA?
In this article, families can learn more about what Clever's Classroom Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is, and how students will use it when logging into Clever. If experiencing any issues, please contact your child's teacher for further assistance.
What is Classroom MFA?
Enhanced Security: Clever’s Classroom MFA is a way to safely log into Clever using 2 picture icon factors to prove student users are logging into the correct account. MFA creates a second layer of security for student accounts without the need for a second device. This will help to protect sensitive information through secured access and help prevent incidents of account hacking without disrupting learning in the classroom.
Digital Citizenship: MFA helps increase students' digital citizenship skills as they navigate digital environments in a way that's safe and responsible. With Clever’s Classroom MFA protecting all of the applications housed within the Clever Portal, students - and their use of rostered digital resources - are more protected.

How Students Set Up Classroom MFA
Students will login to their device and navigate to the Clever Portal to set-up MFA in just 3 easy steps:
Choose login Animal, click Next
Choose login Food, click Next
Click Done, and remember picture icons selected!
Troubleshooting Forgotten Picture Icons for MFA
If a student forgets their MFA factors or makes a mistake, they can click Try Again. If a student still can’t remember, they can click the Can not login? button. And their teacher will be able to provide them with a single-use backup login code to access Clever.
Once the teacher has provided a backup code, the student can enter it to login without MFA.
Important Considerations for Classroom MFA
Clever’s Classroom MFA will impact Grade 2-12 students starting August 25, 2025.
Students in Grades 2-12 will be prompted to set-up their MFA when opening Clever for the first time at the start of the school year. After they have set-up their picture factors, students will enter it when prompted at Cever login.
If a student cannot remember their pictures, teachers will have the option to provide them with a short-term backup login code. On the student’s login screen, they’ll need to select “Can not login?” This will prompt a screen to enter the code shared with them.
Clever’s Classroom MFA will cover all Single Sign-on (SSO) and Rostering & Single Sign-on (SSO) applications in the Clever Portal. Resources/applications not housed within Clever will not be protected by MFA nor Clever SSO.
Students must re-authenticate MFA (choose their picture factors) every 7 days, or every time they access Clever on a new network other than their school network.
A Clever Badge and MFA are not the same thing. Students with Badges will login to their device/portal using their assigned QR Code Badge without a MFA designation. Only Grades 2-12 will be required to set-up and select MFA picture factors after logging into Clever with their NNPS email address and password.
Clever’s Classroom MFA does not impact device-level authentication. This MFA only affects Clever Portal authentication and is exclusive to Clever.
