How do I join a Zoom meeting from my NNPS iPad? (PK and Kindergarten only)
Pre-K and Kindergarten students use an iPad as their NNPS-issued technology device. This article will review the steps needed for your child to join their teacher’s Zoom meeting in the case of remote learning from home.
Each teacher will communicate with families how they can locate their classroom’s Zoom link. The following instructions will start from that step.
From the iPad, click on the link for the Zoom meeting. You may briefly see the screen to the right.
If the iPad stays on this screen, close the Zoom app and try again.

A box will pop up for a place to type the child’s name. The first time you use Zoom it will display the NNPS iPad name (example: HS-######-CB). Tap after this name and use backspace to delete it. Then, type in the child’s first name.
Select Continue.

You will see a waiting screen stating “Host has joined. We’ve let them know you’re here.”
Please wait for your teacher to admit you to the Zoom meeting.

When your child enters a live Zoom meeting from their iPad, a popup box will appear stating: “To hear others please join audio.”
Select Wifi or cellular data.

The first time your child accesses Zoom from their iPad, a popup box will appear asking for permission to use the microphone.
Select Allow.

To turn on your video, tap the screen and click the video camera icon (“Start Video”) in the meeting toolbar at the bottom of the screen (second icon from the left).
The first time your child enters a live Zoom meeting from their iPad, a pop-up box will appear stating: “Zoom Would Like to Access the Camera.”
Select Allow.

Your child is now in the Zoom meeting. To access meeting controls, tap the middle of the screen and you will see the following options as they appear in the meeting toolbar at the bottom of the screen (from left to right).
Unmute turns on the microphone. Tap it again to Mute (turn off).
Start Video will start the camera and show your video on the screen.
Participants will show a list of who is in the meeting.
Chat allows you or your child to send a message to the class or teacher.
Use Reactions to raise your “digital hand” and send emojis.
Share will only be used if the teacher asks a child to share their screen.
More (far right) allows the student to, change some meeting settings, or background effects. See the picture to the right for the expanded menu under More.
At the top right you will find icons to:
Switch camera (left) will switch between the front view and back view of the camera.
Switch view (right) will let you choose speaker view (to only see the current speaker), gallery view (to show the videos of all students and teachers in the in a grid format), and hide non-video participants.

To leave the meeting, tap the screen, then click the red Leave button in the meeting toolbar at the bottom of the screen (located on the far right).
Click the red button that says Leave Meeting to confirm you want to leave.

There are three Zoom settings we recommend turning ON to improve your child’s Zoom experience.
Auto-Connect Audio
Always Show Meeting Controls
Set Gallery View as Default
Access these settings when you are not in a live Zoom meeting and have returned to the screen pictured here.

Tap the settings icon
in the top left of the screen. Then, select Meetings at the top of the list.

Select Auto Connect Audio at the top. Then, select Wifi. Once you see a check next to Wifi, select Done in the top right.

When the Settings box reappears, scroll down under General, turn on Always Show Meeting Controls, and Set Gallery View as Default. You can then select the back arrow in the top left, then select Close to exit Settings.

You will not need to take all of these steps in future Zoom meetings. Once the steps above are completed during the first time accessing a live Zoom meeting, the iPad will remember the child’s name and all changed settings (microphone, video, audio, show meeting controls, and gallery view).
